Journey of Mark Volman: From Westchester to Rock Legend

Mark Volman (of Turtles, Flo & Eddie) was a legendary American musician, educator, author, and artist’s rights advocate. Best known as a co-founder of the rock group The Turtles and as half of the duo Flo & Eddie, his influence on popular music & culture.

Mark Volman Biography

Mark Volman was born in Los Angeles on April 19, 1947, and started his musical career with high-school band the Crossfires, who changed their name to The Turtles in 1965. Teaming with Howard Kaylan, Volman helped power the group to stardom with their irrepressible harmonies and toothsome, category-jumping hits. “Happy Together” (1967) went to No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart, an American oldie, a rock perennial. Other singles, including “She’d Rather Be With Me,” “Elenore” and “You Showed Me” reaffirmed their status in the ‘60s music canon.

The Turtles were celebrated for their wit and inventiveness, exemplified by the 1968 concept album “The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands,” whose every track was played in a different musical style. The band had a fan in none other than President Nixon’s daughter, and they once played the White House.

By the time The Turtles disbanded in 1970, legal restrictions limited Volman and Kaylan to perform under pseudonyms, and thus Flo & Eddie was born. The pair also became members of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, touring and appearing in the film “200 Motels.” As Flo & Eddie, Volman and Kaylan sang backing vocals on recordings by T. Rex (“Bang a Gong (Get It On)”), Bruce Springsteen (“Hungry Heart”), John Lennon, Alice Cooper, and many more.

They provided the music and voices for animated movies, hosted syndicated radio programs and wrote songs for children’s TV (like Strawberry Shortcake). The friends later regained the right to The Turtles name and continued to tour with different personnel into the 2010s.

Volman returned to academia in the 1990s, earning undergraduate and master’s degrees. He earned a faculty award at Belmont University, where he was a professor of music business. Volman would go on to become a leading voice for artists’ rights, in particular around copyright for older recordings.

Volman fought cancer and was also diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia in 2020, but he continued to be musically active, revealing his diagnosis only in 2023, when he was promoting his memoir. He is survived by his partner, Emily Volman; his daughters, Hallie and Sarina; and his brother, Phil; all of Nashville.
He died in Nashville on September 5, 2025, at age 78, leaving his partner Emily Volman, daughters Hallie and Sarina, and brother Phil.
